The Rookie League is our co-ed entry level for baseball and softball; you will find the same information on this website's baseball and softball pages.

It is a non-competitive league comprised of children aged five by December 31, 2024 (Pre-K) and Kindergarteners. For Fall ball, children must turn five by July 30, 2025.

The league is designed for the children to have fun while learning the basic elements of baseball: throwing, fielding, running, and batting. Rookie League is an underhand coach pitch league that uses a “safe ball” to minimize the chance of injury.

FAQs

What is the difference between Rookie Softball and Rookie Baseball?

Nothing! They are the same team; the teams are co-ed. We organize it this way on the website so you can find the information you are looking for!

I want to help!  How can I do that? Do I need any experience?

We need volunteers to manage! Managing a Rookie League team is not intense and doesn't require as big of a time commitment as some of the other levels do. Please send Scott a note if you are interested in managing a team. If you're on the fence, please contact Scott with any questions.

When will we find out about our team?

Fall: Typically by the end of August.

Spring: Team information is sent out in mid-June.

Will my friend request be honored?

We do our very best! Beyond that, we generally group children that go to the same school on the same team.

When do games begin?

Fall: Rookie League games will be on Saturdays starting with the Saturday after Labor Day Weekend and will go until the weekend of 10/28. We will partner with Wauconda at the Rookie League level in the fall. Most of our games will be at Staples Park, but there may be a few games on the schedule at some of the Wauconda ball fields.

Spring: Games will start mid-June and run through the first week of August (there will not be any games the weekend of July 4th). The schedule will have approximately 12 games (2 games/week, one game during the week in the evening, and one on the weekend). The games consist of a 30 min practice followed by a 3-inning (approximately 45-minute) game.

LZBSA had Spring Opening Day!  Did I miss the start of the Rookie Season? No, the rookie league starts in June! While the rest of the LZBSA leagues start practices in April and play games in May and June, we start Rookie in mid-June.

What equipment does my player need for Rookie League?

LZBSA provides a shirt and hat. Additionally, each team will be supplied with a team bat and a helmet or two.

Kids playing in the league should have their own baseball glove, baseball pants (sweatpants are perfectly fine), baseball cleats (gym shoes are fine, as long as you don't mind them getting dirty), and a water bottle.

Many players will bring their own bats and helmets, which is fine too.

Do Rookies take Spring pictures with the rest of the league?

No, we have a separate picture day for Rookie League.
