Practice Tips

You can't make a great play unless you do it first in practice.

Practice Tips

  • Have LOTS of short 5 and 10 minute activities broken up among 3+ stations to keep them moving.  Make SLIDING practice one of those stations at EACH practice until the season is about 2/3 complete.
  • Have catchers put gear on and catch a pitcher.  Then, from a short distance, have the pitcher throw balls in the dirt.
  • Play a 20-30 minute game.Uneven number of players can be solved by rotating a designated pitcher or catcher position.
  • To speed the tempo of your practice game up and provide LOTS of fielding, make it a SOFT TOSS game, where the coach soft tosses the throw from the opposite batters box and the batter hits it out in to the field.  This WAKES everybody up.
  • Or you could make it a t-ball game (which is sometimes a good idea with older kids to reeducate them on where to make contact with inside versus outside pitches).
  • Finish every practice with some sort of running.
  • Finish with fun contests and games!
