The high school athletes, under the direction of the Travel Girls President Ron McGinnis, provided an array of tips on how to better play the game. Areas of focus included how to get more speed while pitching as well as running the bases most effectively. Infielders learned how to correctly stretch at first base, hold the runner on the base and how to properly cover third. The older athletes instructed how to hit properly, slide and catch fly balls. Younger girls played a target practice throwing game while some of the older pitchers competed to see how many strikes they could throw.
The players looked up to the high school athletes and listened closely to their tips and instruction that they will now bring back to their own teams as the season gets underway.
"It was only a few years ago that these high school girls were playing at your level," McGinnis told the wide-eyed younger players.
A highlight of the day was when the high school girls took the field for a demonstration of fielding practice. A ball was hit to the player, she would call out for the ball and then make a hard throw to first or second base. The athletes backed each other up and made the plays look simple.
The generous gift of the LZHS softball player's time furthers our commitment to providing a top notch softball program. Just a couple hours provided motivation, role models and skill development for our young players.
